Nationwide,
women account for approximately one-quarter of all AIDS cases. Across
the country, as well as in New York City, AIDS is the leading cause of
death for women age 25-44. In New York City, 53% of AIDS cases among women
are attributable to injection drug use. The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention have found that approximately 80% of HIV positive women
are injection drug users (IDUs) or sexual partners of IDUs.
