Safety Counts-A Stages of Change Intervention Program

Safety Counts is a four-month intensive intervention for drug users who want to reduce a risky behavior (sharing needles or engaging in unprotected sex, for example) and are prepared to sign a “contract” to make a significant change in their lives.  Once enrolled, they move through a program based on the Stages of Change behavioral theory. They participate in groups and individual sessions, social supports, case management, and community building to help them work on their goals and improve their lives. Evaluations show that Safety Counts is an effective harm reduction strategy and PHP has been asked to train other agencies in New York and New England in the program’s methodology.
