People we
Serve (continued)
PHP has
overcome these barriers through its peer-based, client-centered services,
and presently has more than 4,000 registered participants in its harm
reduction/syringe exchange programs. All participants are either HIV-infected
or at high risk for HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections.
Of the participants we serve 25% female; 69% male and 6% registered as
transgender. 24% are African American, 29% Latino/a and 46% are white
and 1% each are Asian/Pacific Islander or Native American.
The majority
of participants are older, long-term drug users. Less than 1% are under
20; 17% 20-29; 34% 30-39; 36% 40-49 and 13% over 49 years old.
In order
to ensure that PHP is responsive to the needs of its clients, a Participant
Advisory Committee (PAC) has been formed to identify potential problems
in PHP's delivery of services and to find solutions to those problems.
The PAC also provides a mechanism for participant input into PHP's procedures
and operations.
