Mental Health
Services
Acceptance
and Empathy:
The PHP client may be actively using illicit drugs, may be engaged in
behaviors that are highly stigmatized such as prostitution, may be homeless,
or just released from prison. Whether this is the case or not, mental
health services are delivered in such a way that the client will feel
accepted and understood. PHP's mental health service provider will not
judge the client's actions; but, instead, will work hard to understand
his or her life in a nonjudgmental environment. In addition, the provider
will never pressure the client to remove one coping mechanism (e.g., drug
use) until the client has another in place (e.g., social support, stable
housing, etc.). The client determines what he or she wants. The therapist
is there to help the client achieve his or her goals.
